The Mobile Revolution

Feb 17
2011

I had the pleasure to enjoy a speech by Lynette Webb where she mentioned some incredible numbers and trends.
Because of my job I’m very aware of what’s happening with Mobile but this particular speech got me thinking.

Mobile is now the most widespread technology in the world.
Have you ever entered into panic mode just because you have realized that you have left your phone at home?
Yes, being constantly connected is now a normal obsession.

Connections are getting faster and inexpensive and any time very soon, there will be more smartphones than computers.

I don’t like comparison but there are some interesting ones:
- By 2004 we had more mobile phones than credit cards.
- By 2008 there were more mobile phones than FM radios on the planet.
- By 2008 mobiles are ubiquitous in Europe, with more subscriptions than people in most cases.

And I can’t stop thinking about the future. A few years ago, I couldn’t remotely imagine that I could surf the Internet with my mobile phone (a big black heavy plastic thing in my bag) and now it’s the most natural thing in the world.

Can you imagine the phone of the future? How many thing will we be able to perform with it? What about the screen, the shape, the applications? Will it drive our car for us?

Half of new internet connections now come from mobile devices and this is just the beginning!

When I think about Online Advertising my mind shakes. What a tremendous opportunity for advertisers and editors!
Calling all the creative minds of the world!!!!!

Are you an Online Advertiser? Are doing something to incorporate mobile into your online marketing strategy? If the answer is no, you should definitely think about it!

The New Advertising Threesome: Offline, Online and Social

Oct 04
2010

After a meeting  I had with a client today, I could confirmed how the different media available at the moment isn’t correctly utilized. Advertisers don’t always realize the potential. It’s like a tale…

Chapter 1: When Offline meets Online. Offline is not single anymore.

We know offline is important. TV ads, billboards, magazines, radio etc… have a massive reach and it’s our traditional stuff right? A TV ad at a particular time, we’ll be reaching almost a whole nation. But, bear this in mind, whatever you advertise  offline, has to appear online. People will search for you. People will Google your slogan or go to your website or search for your videos on YouTube. If you say on TV that you’ll be offering a 50% discount, believe me, audience will try to reach your website. Offline falls in love with Online.

Chapter 2: Why not? Let’s try a threesome!

I’m surprised of how often big companies and institutions forget about what I call “The Media Threesome”. Offline and Online, both meet Social.

You can monitor the instant effect of any online or offline campaign in your Twitter account, on blogs, Facebook, Orkut etc. The audience searching for your page after watching a TV ad, will post on Twitter how great your offer is or blog about the great shopping day with your 50% discount. Offline, Online and Media are in love with each other.  You can’t love only one, you’ll have to love the three of them. Poligamy is now legal in the advertising world.

The end: Love is in the air…  orgy next?

The 7 predictions for Display Advertising

Sep 28
2010

As the Google Display team has announced today, display advertising is going to be very different 5 years from now. The predictions for 2015 are:

  1. 50% of investment on display will include cost per video advertising. Yep, Youtube is going to be monetized in different ways. 2 new formats were presented today and basically we’ll be able to predict the videos you’re going to watch.
  2. 75% of ads will be “social” in nature. All user will be able to share, comment on, & provide feedback on ads.
  3. 50% of audience buying real time bidding. Real time display advertising is definitely coming!
  4. Mobile, the number 1 screen: they showed a very cool new feature for Google Goggles. Now you’ll be able to take a picture of any ad on a newspaper, magazine… and Goggles will give you the info about the ad and the company running that ad.
  5. Metrics more important than the click: CPA, bounce rate, View Through Conversions…
  6. Rich media in 50 % of display
  7. Display will be a 50 billion industry.

I’m waiting for the recorded version of the session to post it as it’s totally worthy to see the live demo they did with Google Goggles and some other examples.
I expected more comments about the possible the efect of iPad/Tablets on display advertising but apart from that, I think these predictions are quite a hint of what future will bring to us. However, they were talking about 2015 and I think we’ll see these changes by 2013.
What do you think?
