Don’t say “Hello!”
2011
It’s funny how this conversation started the other day.
I’m a sales person but working at Google it’s easy to make friends with engineers.
I was talking to one of my engineer friends about social relationships in the company and how different sales people are from engineers.
We both agreed. Yes, we are different.
The funniest part was when we got to touch the different ways of communicating through instant messaging.
He immediately said: I hate when people just say…
People: hello!
My friend: hi!
People: I have a quick question
My friend: yes
…..
He wanted the conversation to be:
People: hello, I have this issue and I need….
My friend: Oh yes!, we could….
I partially agreed on that practical approach but on the other hand I understand that people want to be friendly!
Saying hello and waiting for the other person to respond is the way to check that everyone is ready to have a conversation!
We couldn’t come to an end for this…
What do you think?
